Lump sums for social assistance, child benefit and fuel allowance Ireland: Payment dates for €1.2 billion lump sums for social benefits to be announced today

Payment dates for the €1.2 billion suite of budget lump sums for people will be announced today.

The double fall flat rate will come into effect next Monday and will benefit 1.4 million social welfare recipients.

Pensioners receive a fuel subsidy of 400 euros to cover living expenses. Broader eligibility for fuel allowances was also announced in the budget. It begins the week of November 14th.

A double child benefit payment will be paid in the week beginning November 1st. It will go to 639,000 families with 1.2 million children.

The lump sum fuel allowance will benefit 371,000 households – next year it is set to rise to over 450,000 after agreeing the biggest-ever expansion of the scheme due to the current crisis.

Also from November 14, a lump sum payment of €200 will be paid to 234,000 people who receive housing benefit.

Recipients of the Working Family Payment receive a flat-rate cost of living allowance of €500.

A handicap allowance of 500 euros will also be paid out this week – a measure that the handicapped industry welcomes.

A €500 payment will also be made to over 130,000 carers who receive the Carers Support Grant.

Finally, in the run-up to Christmas, a 100-part Christmas bonus is also paid out.

Social Protection Secretary Heather Humphreys and Public Expenditure and Reform Secretary Michael McGrath will formally set payment dates today.

A total of eight different lump sums will be paid out by Christmas, with a focus on pensioners, caring relatives, people with disabilities and working families.

The Social Protection budget was the largest in the state’s history and included a series of lump sum payments and rate increases to help people manage the cost of living.

The lump sum payments are intended to keep people covered during the winter months and given the acute cost of living pressures families are facing.

There is also a large increase in the fuel allowance, with up to 81,000 new homes receiving help on their fuel bills for the first time.

Meanwhile, across-the-board social security increases of €12 per week. These measures will come into force in January 2023.
