One person died in a fire in a high-rise building overnight.

Residents had to be evacuated from Green Court in Luton, Bedfordshire, after the fire broke out around 4am.

Several people living there and several police officers were taken to the hospital for treatment. Bedfordshire Live reports.

Unfortunately, one person was pronounced dead.

As of 8 a.m., firefighters stayed on site to look for hotspots — the most active parts of the fire that caused it to spread.

Investigative teams are also in the apartments to find out how the fire started.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said just before 8am: “The fire at Green Court, Luton has now been extinguished and we are working with partners such as Luton Council and Bedfordshire Fire to care for residents who have been evacuated, while making the building safe.

“A small number of people, including local residents and police officers, were taken to hospital for treatment and unfortunately one person has been confirmed to have died at the scene. All occupants were accounted for.

“We understand this is a difficult time and people want to know if their loved ones are safe.

“We ask people not to speculate or share images of the incident as it could cause distress to those involved. We will provide regular updates as soon as we have them.”

Forty firefighters were called to Green Court to help fight the blaze.

The building is 44 meters high, 15 floors high and was built in 1965.

Around 7am, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene of a serious residential fire in Luton.

“Ten devices are present. The fire has now been fully extinguished and crews are working to ensure there are no persistent hotspots. The fire investigation team is present.”

In 2016, firefighters were called to Green Court when a fire broke out in a second floor apartment.

Three adults and one child were in the apartment at the time and were able to get out of the apartment after suffering the consequences of smoke inhalation.
