French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Berlin on Monday to meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Elysée Palace announced on Thursday.
Macron is visiting the German capital on his first trip abroad since his recent re-election, in line with an established tradition for Paris and Berlin.
Last December, a newly sworn Scholz visited Paris two days after his inauguration in Germany.
During the May 9 visit, Macron and Scholz will discuss the situation in Ukraine and European sovereignty. “The discussion will focus in particular on defense and energy issues,” the Élysée said in a statement, as countries around the EU weigh the European Commission’s plan for a sixth package of sanctions against Russia.
Macron and Scholz will also discuss international issues as part of the German G7 presidency, which will meet at the end of June. The situation in the Sahel, the Western Balkans, EU-China relations and bilateral issues will also be on the agenda, according to the statement.
