Macron red-faced after tomato attack – POLITICO

It had to be French President Emmanuel Macron swept away by security on Wednesday after being attacked with cherry tomatoes on his first outing since winning the election on Sunday.

Macron was speaking to a small crowd at a market in Cergy, a northwest Paris suburb, when someone in the crowd threw a handful of cherry tomatoes in his direction.

The tomatoes hit a passerby and failed to connect with the president, but prompted shouts from the crowd and his guard, who shouted “projectile” before opening an umbrella to shield Macron from further attacks. He was then taken away from the scene of the crime.

Macron said he was visiting Cergy, an area with around 65,000 inhabitants about 30 kilometers from central Paris to show his commitment to listening to and governing all French people, no matter who they voted for.

Almost half — 48 percent — of the suburb’s voters decided for far-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round of the April 10 presidential election, with Macron trailing a mere 23.7 percent.

“I came to say that I heard everyone’s voice and that I will continue to stand up for the neighborhoods that are struggling the most…every day,” Macron said calledbefore the incident took place.
