Madeleine McCann’s parents lose final stages of legal battle against Portuguese detective

Madeleine McCann‘s parents Kate and Gerry have lost the latest phase of their legal battle over comments made by retired Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral.

The couple’s lawyers had argued that the Portuguese authorities had violated their right to private and family life when the local courts dealt with their defamation lawsuits against Mr Amaral.

He claimed in a book, a television documentary and a newspaper interview that the McCanns were involved in the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine.

The court found that the couple’s reputation had been damaged by their brief suspicion in the case, rather than by Mr Amaral’s statements.

Madeleine disappeared on vacation with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal in May 2007.

The McCanns now have three months to appeal the decision.
