Mads Mikkelsen’s Casino Royale Cast it all to location

inside Entertainment Weekly InterviewDebbie McWilliams, casting director for “Casino Royale,” said that the studio initially thought of another actor to play Le Chiffre. When they can’t lock that actor in the part, they have to shift gears.

“You always have to keep your eyes wide open in case you have to replace someone, which has happened so many times. I’ve been following Mads Mikkelsen for quite some time and have seen him in a couple of Danish films and it was really impressive. I have an eye on him although, in my opinion, he is not quite right for the role because his personal name is La Chiffre which means French, but once our French actor wasn’t going to be cast, we were in Prague and so was Mads Mikkelsen, so I grabbed him and brought him in.”

According to one Interview with IGN in 2005, not even Mikkelsen knew that he was the replacement. Despite the last-minute casting, Mikkelsen completely nailed the part, bringing back the energy to the part that really made him seem on par with Bond.

I’m sure this kind of thing happens a lot, where actors can’t take on a part and get moved out at the last minute. It raises a lot of questions about what the film would be like if the unnamed French actor they wanted to play Le Chiffre had agreed to. For me, Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre is just as important to the movie as Craig as Bond. It was an interesting thought exercise, but considering how great “Casino Royale” is, I think we should all be grateful it fell to Mikkelsen. Mads Mikkelsen’s Casino Royale Cast it all to location
