Making a CEO: Which universities have produced the most CEOs?

A new study by Preply has published a list of the top universities that have produced the most CEOs worldwide.

What makes a CEO?

It takes a lot to become a CEO and have the right mix of talent, leadership and business strategy. But is that enough? Online learning provider Preply has conducted extensive research to identify the best schools to become a leading CEO. Certain schools around the world appear to produce the most CEOs, suggesting that education and specialty can be the most important influencing factors when it comes to appointing a CEO.

What subjects do CEOs study?

When it comes to issues, there seem to be some clear trends that CEOs are studying. Most CEOs have degrees in economics, business administration, and engineering. The majority studied economics (11.6%), business administration (7.6%), engineering (5.3%), law (4.1%) and finance (3.3%).

Do CEOs go to graduate school?

According to the study, there are many CEOs with masters or PhD degrees (35%). There are also many MBAs – 227 to be exact.

But there are at least 192 executives in the study who didn’t go to graduate school. These include current and former CEOs of major companies such as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Virgin’s Richard Branson.

There is no university type to become a CEO

There is no one type of university that also dominates the list. Of the ten universities with the most CEOs worldwide, the list includes traditional liberal arts universities, Ivy League schools, public universities, and schools known for their technology and computer science programs.

The degrees of the Forbes list leaders show that a variety of universities — some household names and others hidden gems — can put you on the path to success in becoming a CEO.

Amy Pritchett, Preply’s Student Success Manager, says:

“The Forbes list of CEOs is arguably among the most influential executives in the world. So we wanted to better understand what this elite group of people have in common and what it takes to get to the top.

We know that many universities offer exceptional educational and business degrees. So we wanted to find out if there are any universities that have a track record of developing strong leadership. When you look at this research, it’s clear that some universities have the right ingredients to produce successful CEOs.”
