A man in his 20s is in serious condition in hospital this afternoon after being attacked on the main street of a Midlands town in the early hours.
The victim was allegedly attacked around 2am this morning on Main Street in Granard, Co Longford.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and treated the man before he was taken to Cavan General Hospital for treatment of “serious” injuries.
A Gardaí spokesman said: “Gardaí in Granard was alerted to a serious attack that took place in the early hours of this Sunday 3 May.
“About 2am a man (mid 20s) was seriously assaulted and taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where he was in serious condition. He is still receiving treatment at this time.
A large section of the main street in the town of North Longford was closed off this morning to allow for an engineering survey.
Local councilor PJ Reilly said the incident was an episode largely atypical of the area.
“It is very unfortunate that such a serious incident should take place in what is normally a quiet, rural part of Co Longford,” he said.
“And that it comes at a time when people were out and enjoying a happy and peaceful night is most unfortunate.”
