A man is fighting for his life at Cork University Hospital (CUH) and a woman is also being treated after a serious burglary in Cork on Saturday.
The violent incident happened around 4pm yesterday at McCurtain Villas, Cork.
Gardaí said a man entered a property at McCurtain Villas and assaulted a man in his 20s and a woman in her 60s.
The man was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment, where his condition is currently described as critical.
The woman is also being treated at CUH for her injuries, which are believed to be non-life threatening.
Gardaí is appealing for witnesses to come forward and wants to speak to anyone who was in the area between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and is appealing to anyone who may have seen anything to come forward.
Gardaí are particularly keen that anyone who has camera footage (including dashcam) from the area at this time make it available to the Gardaí investigation.
