A man arrested in Dublin in connection with an ongoing investigation into the sim-swapping scam has been released without charge.
The 27-year-old was arrested in Tallaght yesterday as part of an ongoing investigation being carried out by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau.
He has since been released without charge. A file is now being prepared for the public prosecutor’s office.
Members of the GNECB conducted an investigation into sim swapping, account takeover and money laundering.
A sim swapping scam occurs when a scammer contacts a potential victim’s phone provider, having previously obtained information about the victim. Then they get the phone company to switch the victim’s cellphone number to a sim number in the scammer’s phone.
This is then used to exploit vulnerabilities in two-factor authentication and they can obtain bank account access codes.
