A 29-year-old man has been released on bail after being charged in connection with a seizure of more than €100,000 of the ecstasy drug MDMA.
ose dos Santos, with an address at Clonshaugh Heights in Priorswood, Dublin 17, appeared at a hearing of Dublin District Court in the Criminal Courts this morning.
The accused was arrested on Monday as part of a joint intelligence operation carried out by the Revenue Commissioners Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs & Organized Crime Bureau and the Store Street Garda Drugs Unit as part of ongoing investigations into organized crime groups operating in Dublin City,
The operation led to a search of a building in the Dublin 1 area, during which around 1.898kg of MDMA block and MDMA tablets with an estimated value of €113,891 were seized by customs officers.
Garda Brian Kenny today told Judge John Brennan that Mr dos Santos did not provide an answer when he was charged with drug possession and drug possession with intent to supply others under Section 3 and Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Garda Kenny said he would not object to a bail request but would seek a large cash bail of €10,000 and conditions that the defendant would reside at his address, not change address, report to Coolock Garda Station daily and stay away from Dublin 1 area, give Gardai a phone number where he can be reached and do not leave the country.
Attorney Donal Quigley said for the defendant his client would honor bail but said his client was unable to pay the €10,000 bail in cash.
He said his client is a fast-food delivery driver who earns €2,000 a month and pays half of that as rent.
Judge Brennan approved cash bail of €500 and placed the defendant in custody with consent to bail, appearing again in court on August 23 to receive instructions from the chief prosecutor.
He also granted legal aid in the case.
