A 74-year-old man and his wife helped pull Nathan Drew Morgan and his girlfriend out of the water after they fell off their jet ski before allegedly shooting him dead
A boatswain shot and killed a jet skier he was rescuing from the water after he got into trouble when he became aggressive, sources say.
The 74-year-old, who was on the boat with his wife, claimed he was forced to use his gun to protect himself when Nathan Drew Morgan started using it attack him.
The shooting happened after he rescued the man and his girlfriend on March 15 at Lake Keowee in South Carolina.
A police statement said that neither Morgan nor his girlfriend were wearing life jackets and the jet ski “continued to walk and make circles in the lake” while the two were in the water.
The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said the two went over on the boat and rescued the couple, but then Morgan “got agitated and started attacking the couple on the pontoon.”
After an investigation, it was decided that the man, whose name has not been released, acted in self-defense.
A statement of the police said: “A shooting that occurred on a pontoon boat on Lake Keowee on Tuesday afternoon has been ruled a case of self-defense.
“Investigators met with the 10th Circuit Attorney’s Office yesterday to present the evidence and information obtained in the case. Based on the evidence presented, 10th Circuit Attorney David Wagner has determined that the shooting was in self-defense and no charges are being filed.
“Investigators say all parties have been informed of the decision not to press charges in the case.
“The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office asks for continued prayers for the family of Nathan Drew Morgan, who passed away as a result of the shooting.”
Investigators were told the man may have wanted to return to the jet ski and his girlfriend pushed him back into the water to try to calm the situation.
But when the couple helped Morgan onto the boat a second time and he continued to be aggressive, the man shot him “fearing for his life and his wife’s”.
Police were also told that Morgan and his girlfriend may have argued before falling in the water.
Morgan, from nearby Valhalla, reportedly died from gunshot wounds to the chest less than a week before his 10-year-old son’s birthday.
Sheriff Mike Crenshaw told The Journal of Seneca that Morgan may have been drunk.
Morgan’s obituary describes him as a man who “enjoyed being on the water, fishing, sitting around the campfire and playing basketball.”
