Man, 80, dead and two injured in tragic Galway crash as Gardai appeals for information

A man in his 80s has died and two others were taken to hospital following a crash in Co Galway today.

The tragic accident happened this afternoon on the westbound M6 line between Junction 18 and Junction 19.

Gardai is currently at the scene of the three-vehicle crash, and the road is closed for technical inspection.

A driver in his 80s was pronounced dead at the scene.

And two others; a man in his 70s and a woman in her 20s were taken to University Hospital Galwaybut their injuries are understood to be not life-threatening.

ONE Garda A spokesman said: “Gardaí is currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving three cars, on the westbound M6 between Junction 18 and Junction 19 at approximately 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, January 20, 2022.

“The driver of one of the vehicles, a man in his 80s, died at the scene.

“A man in his 70s and a woman in her 20s were taken to Galway University Hospital for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.”

They added: “The road is currently closed to allow Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct a technical inspection.

Police have now appealed to any witnesses to the horrific crash to proceed.

A spokesman said: “Gardaí is appealing for witnesses to come forward and any passerby with footage is asked to provide this information in order to investigate Gardaí.”
