A MAN has been arrested following a string of reports of sexual assault on a beach by a group of men.
Detectives investigating the reports in Brighton are appealing for more victims and witnesses to come forward.
Around 6pm on Tuesday 19 July, police received a report from a third party of a group of men sexually assaulting and harassing women and girls on the beach.
Officers attended and were briefed on several incidents that were reported to lifeguards in the same group. This included following girls in the water and touching them.
All incidents are said to have happened on the stretch of beach between Brighton Pier and the lifeguard hut to the east. Reports are from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
A 32-year-old man from Hayes, London, has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman. He was released on bail while the investigation continues.
Investigator Mark Taylor said: “These are worrying reports and we are urging anyone who was the victim of sexual, inappropriate or abusive behavior on Brighton Beach that day to come forward so we can establish the full circumstances of what happened.
“The area was very busy at the time and we believe a number of people will have observed this behavior. If you have any information, no matter how small, please contact us.
“We take reports of sexual assault incredibly seriously and encourage people to report any incidents to us as soon as possible so that we can identify any perpetrators, but also support and protect any victims.”
