Man arrested for stealing safe and cash in decades-old salon burglary case

A Kilkenny man has been remanded in custody after being stopped at Dublin Port and arrested more than a decade ago for stealing a safe and cash and during a burglary at a hair salon.

nthony Corry, 36, from Butts Green, Kilkenny, appeared before Judge Cephas Power at Dublin District Court.

He is charged with stealing a safe and €1,765 during a burglary in Patrick Street, Kilkenny on 14 March 2010.

At the time of his arrest, Gardai had previously issued an arrest warrant for his failure to appear in court and they showed it to the accused.

He has not yet indicated how he will plead the charges.

Garda Ray Barry told Judge Power he arrested the accused at the port on Friday night. Mr Corry was warned and did not reply.

There was no objection to bail; However, Judge Power found that the warrant was issued 12 years ago and the defendant has since lived in Manchester, England.

The judge heard that when Gardai met the accused at the port, there was no agreement.

He said the court needed “a bit of persuasion” to grant bail because he was granting legal aid and hiring attorney Paul Byrne to represent the defendant.

After a pause, Mr Byrne was ordered his client would not seek bail and he agreed to be remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.

He urged Gardai to disclose the evidence to prosecutors before the next hearing.

Judge Power agreed to make this an order and granted a request from the defense to direct medical attention to the detained defendant. Man arrested for stealing safe and cash in decades-old salon burglary case
