Man arrested in connection with an assault that left another man (aged 40) in critical condition


A man has been arrested in connection with a serious assault that left a Co Wicklow man in critical condition in hospital.

The victim, aged in his 40s and a father from Ashford, Co. Wicklow, was attacked outside a house in Arklow last week.

“A man has been arrested in connection with the attack of a man at a property in Arklow, Co. Wicklow, in the early hours of August 2,” a Garda spokesman said.

“The arrested man, aged over 40, is currently being held at Bray Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. The injured man is in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital. The investigations are ongoing.”

Gardaí were made aware of the incident and when they arrived at the scene the man was conscious but refused medical treatment.

Officers left but it is understood the victim was unwell the next day and was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital by ambulance.

Due to the severity of his head injuries, he was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he is in critical condition.

It is understood the hospital contacted Gardaí to say the victim had sustained very serious injuries.

Arklow Gardaí launched a full investigation and a house on the Ashfield estate was sealed off to facilitate engineering and forensic investigations.

Gardaí have asked witnesses to get in touch with them.

They are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area from 12:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and who may have witnessed something to get in touch.

They are particularly interested in anyone who might have camera footage of the area at this time. including dashcam footage to make it available to Gardaí investigations.
