A MAN has been arrested in connection with the case of a Lithuanian-born woman who went missing in Ireland more than 3 years ago.

The policemen involved in the probe then queried whether The missing woman is the target of a human trafficking gang.

The man, who was arrested this morning, is being held at a Garda station in the Midlands.

Gardai has said he could be detained for up to 24 hours.

ARREST MADE

A spokesman said: “Gardai in Dundalk was investigating the disappearance of Giedre Raguckaite in May 2018 when this morning, Monday, January 10, 2022, a man was arrested.

“He was arrested and is currently being held at a Garda station in the Midlands on a wanted notice under Section 42, Criminal Justice Act, 2006. He may be detained for up to 24 hours.”

Investigations in 2018 looked into whether Raguckaite was “caught” by a trafficking gang.

She contacted her father on the day of her disappearance but has not contacted family and friends since May 26.

The missing woman moved to Ireland in March 2018 and is being prepared to return to the UK. She has no other relatives living here.

Interpol investigated the incident, working closely with Gardai to see if she traveled abroad after her last sighting in Ireland.

Speaking in October 2018, a source said: “All avenues are being explored in the investigation including the possibility that she may have been targeted by a gang involved in human trafficking. .

“The case is still being treated as a missing persons investigation but as time went on there was growing concern for her safety and well-being.

“Gardai has contacted the Lithuanian authorities but they have not yet sent back the information regarding the woman’s bank account.

Since she was last seen at a house in Dundalk, no one has seen her and it is important for everyone to release any information.”
