Man charged after protest at The Level in Brighton

A man has been charged with dual possession of a bladed object after a heated protest in Brighton city centre.

Craig Dawson, 50, of no fixed address, has also been charged with assault after he was initially arrested on suspicion of touching sexual assault.

Dawson was arrested at a protest in Victoria Gardens where two groups of activists clashed over an event involving Kellie-Jay Keen, also known as Posie Parker.

He has since been released on bail and is due to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court in the new year.

A woman was also arrested on suspicion of assault and a man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer at the September event. Both have since been released as part of an investigation.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “On Sunday 18 September an event and counter-protest took place in Brighton city centre.

“Three arrests were made, a 19-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assault and a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer.

“Both were released pending further investigation as part of investigations.

“A man originally arrested on suspicion of touching sexual assault has now been charged.

“Craig Thomas, 50, of no fixed address, has been charged with assault and double possession of a bladed object. He has been released on bail ahead of a trial scheduled for January 18 at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.”

An event organized by Ms Keen, who describes herself as a women’s rights activist, was met with a large backlash in September.

Protesters at the event described Ms Keen’s views on transgender rights as transphobic.

A significant police presence was seen at the event in an effort to keep the two groups separate.

Police are currently investigating a case in which Ms Keen declined a voluntary police interview in relation to an alleged hate crime.

Ms Keen claims she was threatened with arrest if she did not attend the interview.

A statement from Sussex Police said they will be “contacting the parties involved directly”.
