Man charged with hate crimes for attacking Asian woman with box knife in New York City, police say

A 30-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault as a hate crime after allegedly attacking an Asian woman with a box cutter in Times Square, police said.

Anthony Evans, of Manhattan, was arrested Tuesday night for what the New York City Police Department described as an unprovoked assault on the 59-year-old victim.

In addition to the hate crime charge, Evans was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the attack, which unfolded around 10 a.m. Sunday, police said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Evans had an attorney.

The NYPD had released Evans’ name before his arrest after asking the public for help to identify the suspect, who appeared in surveillance video of the woman being mugged from behind before slashing her right hand with a box cutter slashed.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was pulling a cart and minding his own business when she was attacked, police said.

The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital and then discharged. She should be recovering from her injuries.

Police said Monday they would not investigate the case as a hate crime. NBC New York reported.

It was not clear what had led to the hate crime charges on Tuesday.

An analysis of hate crime data released earlier this year by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism found that hate crimes against Asians increased by 339% in the past year compared to the previous year, with cities such as New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles surpass record numbers in 2020.

The increase was part of an overall 11 percent increase in suspected hate crimes reported to police in a dozen of the largest US cities. The report found that black Americans remain the hardest-hit group in most cities.
