Man charged with murder of 15-year-old ‘hero’ boy who was stabbed to protect his mother

The family of Jakob Szymanski, who was stabbed to death in a Manchester home, has described him as a “hero” and “a mischievous, funny and cheeky boy”.

A man has been charged with the murder of a 15-year-old “hero” who was stabbed to death while trying to protect his mother.

Suleman Altaf, 43, of no fixed address, was charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of an article in a public place.

Greater Manchester Police launched the murder inquiry on June 9 after Jakub Szymanski and his mother Katarzyna Batek were stabbed to death on property in the Miles Platting area of ​​Manchester.

Jakob’s heartbroken family paid tribute to the popular teenager, describing their “hero” as “a mischievous, funny and cheeky boy”.

In a statement from Greater Manchester Police, they said: “Jakub was affectionately known to his family as Kuba and to his friends as Jakub. He was always a popular kid who made friends everywhere due to his friendly and talkative nature.

“He always spoke his mind, he was mischievous, funny and a cheeky boy. He loved his Xbox and football and supported Manchester City.

“He was like any other teenager and he helped so many people, even those he just met. To our family, he is our hero.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they had arrested a 44-year-old man in Kent on June 10 after asking the public for information.

The suspect has been remanded in custody and is due to make his first appearance at a hearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court today (Monday 13 June).

Detective Chief Inspector Alicia Smith of GMP’s Major Incident Team said: “We are continuing our investigation and last night’s arrest was a big step in possibly giving a grieving family the answers they so desperately need.

“A teenager with his whole life ahead of him has tragically lost his life and his mother is not only grieving for her son but is recovering from what will no doubt have been very traumatic.
