The incident was reported outside a venue in Kings Arches on Brighton seafront between 2am and 2.20am on Sunday 31 July.
Przemslaw Pogorzzelec, 42, from Hove, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
He has been remanded in custody and will next appear at Lewes Crown Court on September 29.
Police say a 20-year-old woman is being assisted by specially trained officers.
