Man City £30m Cucurella theory set to be tested as bid rejected

Albion have told Manchester City they need to improve their game significantly if they want to sign Marc Cucurella.

But the door isn’t closed on the Premier League champions as they bid to sign the Seagulls’ Player of the Year.

Albion were quick to turn down a £30m offer from City for Cucurella.

They don’t know if an improved offer will arrive, although it seems very likely.

The lines of communication remain open and the relationship between the key figures of the two clubs is said to be good.

It is understood Albion laughed at what they felt was a ridiculous opening offer for Cucurella, who has been on a five-year contract for the past year.

He was ever-present after joining from Getafe and has proved himself as a high-profile Premier League operator in three left-hand roles.

Albion will reiterate that they have neither the desire nor the need to sell any of their key assets.

While they don’t name a price for Cucurella, the sale of Ben White to Arsenal last summer is widely seen as a guide of sorts.

White opted for £50m initially but it is understood the number did not include add-ons – and Cucurella is said to be more difficult to replace should the need arise.

That would suggest that the oft-quoted £50m figure would NOT necessarily be enough to bring Cucurella to the Etihad.

Meanwhile, it appears North West outlets are being informed that City values him no higher than £30million, a theory that appears to be being tested.

Cucurella and his colleagues are preparing for the first friendly of the summer in front of fans tomorrow (3 p.m.).

Closed-door runs against Union St-Gilloise and Estoril Praia follow.
