Man convicted of cyberstalking teen who later killed herself

A Dutchman was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Friday for sexually blackmailing a Canadian teenager who later took his own life.

Aydin Coban, 44, was convicted in August of child baiting, child pornography, extortion and molesting a teenage girl. Coban’s ruling is likely to set a precedent for those who engage in online sexual harassment.

The Canadian Center for Child Protection said in a press release: “It is encouraging that the Canadian justice system has done its part in bringing the perpetrators to account for these crimes.”

The International Business Times does not release the victim’s name because she was a minor.

Following Coban’s guilty verdict in August, Derek Lints, the father of a 17-year-old son who committed suicide in February after being the victim of an online sexual blackmail scheme, said: “We hope this conviction will give the victims courage to come forward and see that something can be done to help them.”

The girl was only 15 years old when she took her own life. She released a video before describing how the cyberstalking tortured her and how Coban abused her and how it affected her life. In the silent video, she shows a series of cards describing her experiences.

The girl posted her experience on YouTube.

He had molested the girl for three years using 22 pseudonyms on social media accounts including Facebook and Skype. He sent her more than 700 messages, repeatedly threatening to send extracted images and videos of her to her friends and family. Coban reportedly shared pornographic images of the girl on YouTube and other image hosting sites.

Prosecutors argued that a harsh sentence was necessary to protect people from his “heinous” abuse.

British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Martha Devlin read the verdict in court on Friday, declaring: “Ruining [the girl’s] Life was Mr. Coban’s stated goal and, unfortunately, one he achieved.”

After the sentencing, the girl’s mother told CBC News, “We have to make sure there is justice…” and “It has set precedent in the case law for any other case that might go to trial.” It sets the bar … and hopefully these predators who bully children will not get lenient sentences.”

Corbin reportedly appeared unrepentant after the judge’s verdict. He will be extradited from Canada and will serve his sentence in the Netherlands. Man convicted of cyberstalking teen who later killed herself
