Man faces court tonight for fatally assaulting Limerick man Alan Bourke
One of two men arrested in Limerick last week in the fatal assault of Alan Bourke is due to appear in court tonight.
The second man arrested on Friday is still being questioned by officers.
Mr Bourke (48) died after the attack on Parnell Street, Limerick, at around 10.25pm on Friday 15 April.
Rescue workers rushed to the scene outside Colbert Station but Mr Bourke was pronounced dead at Limerick University Hospital a short time later.
His funeral service was held at St Mary’s Church, Athlunkard Street, Limerick City on Friday morning and he was later buried in Castlemungret Cemetery, just yards from the football club he represented with honours.
After his death, a post-mortem was performed on Mr. Bourke’s body at UHL.
On Saturday, Gardaí said they had charged a man.
“The man, in his 30s, is scheduled to appear before a special session of the Ennis District Court today, Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 5 p.m.,” the statement said.
They said a second man in his 30s, also arrested on Friday, remains detained at Henry Street Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Gardaí analyzed CCTV footage from the area last Friday night to identify suspects.
Mr Bourke was a talented striker with Mungret Regional FC in the 1990s and represented Ireland at international youth level.
Mr Bourke is believed to have been living in Cork recently before his death.
