Man held on suspicion of murder in Sligo Town after second man was found dead with “significant injuries”.

Gardaí have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a man’s body was found in a flat in Sligo Town.

It’s the second murder of a man in the city in two days.

Officers were called to a flat on Connaughton Road around 10.30pm on Tuesday where the body of a man in his late 50s was found.

“The man had suffered significant physical injuries,” Gardaí said.

After what was described as an “intense” operation, Gardaí and the Armed Support Unit arrested a man in his early 20s in Sligo Town on suspicion of murder and he is being held for questioning.

This scene will remain intact and the Garda Technical Bureau will conduct technical and forensic investigations into the home.

Regarding the dead man, the force said: “The man’s body remains at the scene at this time and an autopsy will be conducted later today, which will assist as the criminal investigation unfolds.”

Of the operation that followed, they said: “At around 1:45am on 13 April 2022, following intense activity and investigations on Lake Garda, Gardaí in Sligo, with the assistance of the Armed Support Unit, arrested a man in his early 20s in Sligo Town on suspicion of murder.

“This man is currently being held at Sligo Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“Gardaí in Sligo is appealing for anyone with information about this incident to get in touch.

The discovery of the second man’s body in Sligo comes after the remains of Aidan Moffitt, 41, of Cartron Heights, town of Sligo, were discovered at his home at 8.30pm on Monday.

Gardaí believe he was the victim of a homophobia-motivated hate crime.

Mr Moffitt, a peace commissioner, suffered horrific injuries and was severely maimed during an attack that has left the community in Sligo and his native West Roscommon stunned.
