A man fell to his death while repairing a Ferris wheel at a US fairground.
Robert Sanger was killed after falling out of an elevator Monday morning while riding at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, New Jersey.
The 62-year-old, who worked as a subcontractor for Cargo Tech International, was hospitalized but was pronounced dead on arrival at nearby Shore Medical Center.
The Federal Administration for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting an investigation into the incident, it said The Atlantic City Press.
The circumstances under which Sanger fell from the elevator are not yet known.
In a statement, Gillian’s Wonderland Pier President Jay Gillian said: “We are sad to report that a subcontractor employee working on a lift at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier suffered a fatal injury on Monday morning.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. We are working with all relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragic accident. As soon as we receive more information, we will provide it.”
Gillian, who is also running for re-election as Ocean City mayor, announced on Tuesday that he was “suspending all campaigning activities effective immediately” following the tragic incident.
Gillian’s Wonderland Pier was reportedly closed on Monday afternoon but there was no sign of any work being carried out.
Near the Ferris wheel were signs reading “Do Not Cross the Scene of the Crime” and a blue elevator with a tilted platform.
The platform appeared to be about 15 feet off the ground, but it wasn’t clear if it was the same elevator that Sanger fell from.
