A man who allows restaurant staff to sit in chairs in his garden at lunchtime has criticized the head of staff for trying to force him to remove the seats.
In an anonymous post on Reddit, the man said he lives “right behind” a restaurant and said that out of kindness, he put some simple mesh chairs outside so staff have somewhere to sit during their break.
But just weeks after he moved the chairs outside, he was approached by the restaurant’s owner, who demanded he take them away because they make her employees “too comfortable”.
The US man said the workers would only use the chairs when they were taking their scheduled breaks, but the owner insisted she would throw them out herself if he didn’t move them.

in the his posthe said: “We live right behind a restaurant and we have a couple of chairs outside that workers often sit on during their break. We put them up for exactly that purpose, because otherwise they’ll be sitting on our stairs and blocking our front door. And hey, they’re on break and still deserve a load off.
“We also chat with them quite often, they are super nice. So we have provided our extra outdoor chairs for you, for your comfort and ours.
“They’ve been out there for a couple of weeks now and yesterday the owner of the restaurant was out there checking them out when I got back from work. She’s an older woman, maybe in her 60s or 70s, and she asks if the chairs are mine, to which I tell her they are.
“She asked me to put them away because she ‘pays them to work, not to sit’ and because she doesn’t want them to be ‘too comfortable.’
“She said she just wanted to throw them away because she didn’t know who they belonged to.”
The man refuses to remove the chairs from his property and now wants to tie them to his fence with a safety steel cable so the woman can’t get rid of them herself.
He added: “Like what the hell ma’am? I nodded along, certain of whatever you say, but today I ordered one of those steel safety cables and I’m going to attach it to our railing.
“She will not throw away our property and deprive her workers of the opportunity to sit down on their break. f**k that.”
Commenters on the Reddit post were baffled by the restaurant owner’s actions, saying her employees shouldn’t be up all day — especially during breaks.
One person said, “Someone hasn’t learned that happy employees work better.”
While another added, “During her break she doesn’t pay her at all so she can get fucked.”
And a third wrote: “Put up a no sign but let staff know they are welcome on your property. I’ve never understood companies that think you’re unhappy at work and don’t need to be comfortable.”
