Harry Maguire was told to step down as captain and hand it over to a Manchester United teammate.
Whether this season or next, there appears to be a leadership issue at the club that could be resolved with a new permanent manager. Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has been touted as the favorite to join the Old Trafford dugout and the Manchester club may have received a major boost in their search for their next manager.
And whoever comes in at the end of the season has a big decision to make as to whether or not they want to stay with David de Gea as the starting goalkeeper.

Richards’ message to Maguire
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been urged to give up the captaincy and hand it over to the summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo.
Maguire has had a poor season on the pitch, made a string of mistakes and didn’t look like the defender who played a key role in England reaching the Euro 2020 final in the summer. With United lacking any leaders on the pitch, there are a number of former players and managers who believe Ronaldo should receive the armband by the end of the season.
And former Man City defender Micah Richards is one of those voices to believe the former leicester The city defender’s time as skipper has expired.
Ten Hag Boost
Manchester United are still looking for one Ole Gunnar Solskjaer long-term replacement after sacking him last November.
At the top of their list are Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. And a shot in the Netherlands may have hinted at the next man in the Old Trafford dugout. Ajax have signed former striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar in a supporting role.
And it seems ten Hag may not have had much say in the move, signaling the team are preparing for life without the 52-year-old.
Rangnick’s De Gea decision
David de Gea has regained his place as Manchester United’s number one but is yet to do so for Spain.
The shot-stopper was dropped by then-United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season and has had to watch as Dean Henderson solidify as a starter. But over the summer, De Gea was able to reclaim the starting job as Henderson was out through injury and Covid-19.
However, that has not translated to the international scene and his recent omission from the Spain squad could mean caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick faces a difficult decision going forward.
