Manchester United are reportedly close to finalizing a deal with Erik ten Hag to become his next permanent manager, although interim boss Ralf Rangnick has declined to confirm the rumours.
If Ten Hag takes over at Old Trafford, it will be his first managerial job in England and pundit Paul Merson has said the Dutchman’s hiring would be a risk for United. The club has interviewed Ten Hag and former Tottenham Hotspur Mauricio Pochettino for the vacancy.
United will be on the hunt for a striker in the summer and have received a boost in their pursuit of Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, although they may need to recruit players without the lure Champions League Football as her top four hopes remain in doubt.

Rangnick gives Ten Hag an update
Rumors have swirled in recent days that United are on the verge of appointing Ten Hag as their next permanent boss.
Ten Hag has excelled at Ajax over the last five years and has long been among the favorites for the season-ending job at Old Trafford. When news broke that United and the Dutchman were close to the final deal, Rangnick was asked on Friday if he could confirm the latest speculation.
“This is the press conference for tomorrow’s game and I have no intention of talking about new coaches here,” Rangnick told reporters.
Merson passes judgment on Ten Hag
United will risk a lot by signing Ten Hag, according to former player pundit Merson.
The Red Devils had a four-man shortlist that included former Tottenham boss Pochettino and Ten Hag, although the club appear to have decided to hire the latter. Paul Merson has no management experience in England and said it could spell disaster if the club desperately tries to make the right decision.
“You can’t win anything without a good coach and I’m not sure how good a coach Ten Hag is,” he wrote in his Daily Star Column.
Target Nunez transfer boost
Regardless of who takes over at Old Trafford in the summer, signing a new striker must be a priority. Edinson Cavani is set to leave while Anthony Martial’s future remains unclear Cristiano Ronaldo Also has been linked to an early departure from Manchester.
One of the suspected targets is Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, who impressed against their Premier League opponents Liverpool during the week. In a move that could help bring him to Manchester, Nunez has left his current agents and is being replaced by super agent Jorge Mendes.
The striker has scored 28 goals in 33 league games and found the shot in the 3-1 defeat by Liverpool.
