Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez has emerged as a summer transfer target for Manchester United and Arsenal after scoring for the Portuguese giants this season in Europe
Benfica boss Nelson Verissimo believes in striker star Darwin Nunez should demand a fee at the same stadium as Joao Felix should he leave the club this summer.
Manchester United and arsenal were among those who sent scouts to Nunez into action last week Summer transfer window. The Uruguay international is expected to be there one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe in the coming months after a sensational season in the Primeira Liga and Champions League.
Nunez has scored 31 goals in all competitions this season – including this week European Cup match against Liverpool and a hat-trick against Belenenses SAD on Saturday – while he recently handed United a potential Transfer Boost by confirming that he is changing his agent.
The 22-year-old confirmed on Thursday he had left Edgardo Lasalvia after being advised to join super agent Jorge Mendes’ lineup of talented clients in what could portend a summer move: “Let me be clear I mean not I will also renew my contract with my agent Edgardo Lasalvia. I would also like to clarify that neither my family nor I have received any threats [to remain with Lasalvia] and we’re fine.”
Benfica manager Verissimo – who is only temporarily in charge of the Lisbon giants for the remainder of the season – has now spoken out about the forward’s future and whether the club could be paid a significant transfer fee for his services. He named Joao Felix, who was sold by the club to Atletico Madrid for £113m in 2019, and claimed Nunez should receive a fee close to that amount.
“What do you think? Darwin is an excellent player, he showed all his quality,” said Verissimo. “He helped the team a lot, it’s true that the team helped him a lot too.
“He’s a young player with a lot of potential, it’s natural that he’s natural given his growth this season and also his performance in the Champions League games, which arouses the interest of the big European clubs.
“It will be at the end of this season or the following season, depending on what it has shown, it is natural that it will attract interest from other clubs and of course there may be when it goes. As for the numbers, as a Benfica fan I hope he will break into numbers close to those of João Félix (a record €126m).
“Now it’s not my place to enter numbers on this question. What my everyday life with the player is, what he has given us to consider in training and in the game.”
The Uruguayan has emerged as a transfer target for United who are on the hunt for a new striker this summer. Edinson Cavani’s contract at Old Trafford expires this summer and the long-term future of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford are also uncertain.
Nunez starred this season Champions League and most importantly in the group phase win over Barcelona, where the striker scored twice in the 3-0 win over the Catalans. His He scored his biggest goal in the round of 16 against Ajaxwith his crucial second-half header in Amsterdam last month – alongside his clean sheet Liverpool in this week.
