Manchester United have plenty of transfer options to ponder this summer with a major eviction on the horizon and Harry Maguire’s own future could be in question
The defender’s arrival would put further pressure on Maguire after an already difficult season. The England international has been completely out of form this season and has drawn heavy criticism from his own fans.
United have struggled in the First League this year and it even led to it Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked in November but the club’s fate has yet to turn. Ralf Rangnick joined as interim manager until the end of the season.
But the Red Devils are no closer to landing Champions League Football despite recording Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer. United have looked toothless at times going forward, but it’s in defense where most of the worries are – particularly over their captain Maguire.
It has led to talk of replacements, with several targets already linked with a move to Old Trafford. That includes Barcelona star Araujo, who has been in fine form under Xavi this season.
The Uruguay international recently scored a brilliant header real Madrid in El Clasico while doing an expert job of keeping the in-form Vinicius Jr calm. Along with Gerard Pique, the duo have rediscovered their form in Barca’s defense to give them a fighting chance to finish in the top four after a miserable start to the season.

Accordingly ABC, via Sport Witness, United have been looking to lure the Catalonia centre-back away and they are ready to break the bank. They report that the club have already approached Araujo about a transfer this summer.
The Old Trafford outfit want to capitalize on growing concerns over contract talks between Barcelona and the player, which are yet to be settled. The 23-year-old’s term expires in the summer of 2023, less than 18 months away.
It means Barca may have to sell this summer if no agreement is reached on a new deal as they risk losing it for nothing. Araujo is a big fan of Xavi’s project and intends to stay, but only if it means getting paid what he thinks he’s worth.
Currently, the Uruguayan has been offered a salary of £3.3million a year (€4million) but that was seen as too low as he is keen to draw level with the likes of Pedri and Ansu Fati, who have all recently signed new contracts. ABC report that United have already told him they are willing to pay him more than double that amount to snub Barcelona and move there instead.
That would be more than £6.6m a year. For comparison, Maguire earns just under £10million each year, while Varane earns £17.5million each year – which works out to around £340,000 a week. Third-choice Victor Lindelof would earn slightly less than Araujo if he were to move to Old Trafford at £6.2million a year.
ABC further report that although another meeting is planned between Barcelona and defender’s agent Flavio Perchman, the club don’t intend to increase their offer much further. That would suggest the door has been opened for United for a possible transfer this summer.
