Manchester United are said to have increased their interest in Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo as they plan to approach for the summer transfer window.

Araujo’s contract with Barcelona in June 2023 and has attracted the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs with his recent performances.

Barca want to sign a new 23-year-old defender, but negotiations have dragged on throughout the season.

He has been a key figure for the Spanish side this season, having made 30 appearances in all competitions at the heart of defence.

However, he is still following the terms of the five-year contract he signed back in 2018 and has turned down two new offers from Barcelona.

Spanish newspaper Sport reports that the slow nature of negotiations between the club and Uruguay’s representatives has alerted United and Paris Saint-Germain to his potential availability.

Araujo is said to want a contract that suits his nature on the team and, although he is happy to play for Xavi, he knows that United and PSG will pay much better.

The fact that Barcelona signed new contracts with two of their other young stars – Pedri and Ansu Fati in October went unnoticed by Araujo.

United are said to be willing to pay a substantial transfer fee this summer, as well as a high salary, to lure the young defender to Old Trafford.

The possibility of Araujo moving to United in the summer has been further boosted by recent reports that the defender is having to study English regularly in the event he gets a move.

The timing of the developments is interesting as Harry Maguire’s recent struggles have been at the heart of Ralf Rangnick’s defense.

United won 3-2 first Tottenham to return to fourth place in Premier League on Saturday, but they need an inspirational performance from Cristiano Ronaldo to get points.

Ronaldo scored a superb hat-trick to get his side back on track after a 4-1 derby defeat at the hands of City of Manchester last weekend, but United’s defense was once again strained.

Alex Telles conceded a penalty – which Harry Kane scored – for handball, while Maguire owns an own goal from Sergio Reguilon’s cross to make it 2-2 in the second half.

Maguire has struggled to find consistency this season, with two minor injuries contributing to his poor form.

As a result, the United captain has been unable to establish a regular partnership with Raphael Varane arriving in the summer, who has been plagued with injury problems.

United have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight in all competitions and face a big test against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Rangnick’s side walks in Champions League 16 second legs with a 1-1 score thanks to Anthony Elanga’s late goal in Madrid.

Maguire is hoping for a more solid performance, because it looks like his club have their eyes on potential replacements for the summer.
