Erik ten Hag is among the favorites to take over from Manchester United but the Red Devils could face competition for the Ajax boss as other suits keep their eyes on the Dutch manager
Manchester United Reports have it that things might not go quite their way if they decide to pursue Erik ten Hag this summer.
The Red Devils are looking for a new boss because Ralf Rangnick’s transitional period ends at the end of the season. Ten Hag, currently in charge at Ajax, and Mauricio Pochettino have been sounded out as the two favorites for the role. However, should United set their sights on Ten Hag, they are likely to face competition, they say The times.
The Dutchman has helped Ajax dominate domestically while leading them to the last four Champions League in 2019. His impressive work has attracted attention in Germany, where at least one club is interested in hiring Ten Hag. Other clubs across Europe are also considering making a move for the 52-year-old.
Ten Hag has previously worked with Bayern Munich’s B team in Germany, managing them while Pep Guardiola worked at the Allianz Arena. Bayern recently signed Julian Nagelsmann so are unlikely to show any interest in the Bundesliga as they have more success in mind.
Ajax are keen to make another attempt to persuade the Dutchman to stay in Amsterdam where he has one year left on his contract. Ten Hag was reportedly in talks with United last week and was impressed, although the club clarified he was one of four men under consideration.
Former United boss Louis van Gaal, who was axed in 2016 after two seasons at Old Trafford, told Ten Hag not to take the job due to the commercial nature of the association. He said: “Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that’s always good for him Manchester United. But Manchester United is a commercial club so it’s a difficult choice for a manager. He would be better off going to a football club.”

Pochettino was previously linked with the post when he was in charge Tottenhambut the club decided on the appointment Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after an impressive interval. His tenure at PSG hasn’t gone according to plan and he recently witnessed the Parisians’ elimination from the Champions League.
His time in Paris could come to an end together this summer, which would free him to move to Manchester. Spain manager Luis Enrique is another man under consideration but he is linked with the Spain national team and has ruled out taking over this summer. He said: “I’ll be in Qatar with Spain because I gave my word and there’s nothing I’m happier about than representing my country at the World Cup. We’ll see later.”
His compatriot Julen Lopetegui, who has been in charge of Sevilla for the past two seasons, has also watered down speculation linking him with the Old Trafford hotseat. He said: “I’m where I want to be. Will I continue on the Sevilla bench next season? I have no doubts.”
