Manchester United reportedly ‘forgot’ to say it Maurice Pochettino with whom they were in advanced discussions Eric ten Hag about her vacant managerial position.

Ten Hag was confirmed as United’s new permanent boss on Thursday, with the Dutchman taking charge at the end of the season. That ajax Boss fought Pochettino for his appointment, with the duo seen as the two leading candidates for the position.

Talks are said to have continued on the possible makeup of Ten Hag’s backroom staff and his long-term vision for United. Ten Hag was so impressed he was invited to a “protracted meeting” with the club’s Glazer owners, at which both parties left satisfied with one another.

With negotiations with Ten Hag progressing well, it was revealed United wanted to make him their first choice for the acquisition. It is said that the timing for this was ‘awkward’ as Pochettino was not informed of these developments.

Pochettino appears to have been completely surprised that Ten Hag had become the preferred candidate. The Argentine is said to have ‘properly gathered’ information about Manchester as a city, United’s structure and squad profiles.

But at no point did United make direct contact with Paris Saint-Germain to discuss removing him from his contract. The Red Devils had instead planned to inform Pochettino directly of their decision to appoint Ten Hag before the announcement came.

Ten Hag, United and Ajax had all agreed to wait until after Sunday’s KNVB Cup final before making the announcement to avoid distractions. Although Ajax lost that game, United are confident they have appointed the right man, with Murtough hailing his magic at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

“Over the past four years at Ajax, Erik has proven to be one of Europe’s most exciting and successful coaches, known for attractive, attacking football and his side’s commitment to youth,” said Murtough.

“In our discussions with Erik leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed by his long-term vision for a return Manchester United at the level at which we aim to compete and his drive and determination to achieve that. We wish Erik the best of luck as he focuses on completing the season at Ajax and look forward to welcoming him to Manchester United this summer.”
