Man Utd’s worst Premier League season ever

Boubacar Kamara has confirmed he will leave Marseille this summer in connection with a move to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old turned down a contract offer from the French giants to seek “a new challenge” which could take place as part of Erik ten Hag’s revolution at Old Trafford. The new Red Devils boss is adamant about signing a midfielder in the coming months, a position that has been a problem for predecessors Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“After long deliberations, nights of not sleeping, weighing the pros and cons, I have decided not to renew, leaving OM at the end of the season,” Kamara told Telefoot after Marseille ended her season with had finished with a 4-win against Strasbourg. 0. “This is the best decision of the rest of my career. I want to develop further, discover a new challenge.”

The uncapped France international, who is also a target for Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, added: “I’ve made my choice for my future club, which you’ll find out soon. I’m a young man from a neighborhood ending up at the Stade Velodrome. I only knew one jersey, I’ve been at the club since I was 5 years old, I’m 22. My career at OM was unique.”

However, reports in Italy say Aston Villa are the front runners for his signature, with manager Steven Gerrard believed to have been present in Marseille’s 3-2 win over Nantes last month. RMC Sport claimed via Sport Witness that Gerrard made a personal trip to the south of France to see Kamara in action after Villa offered him a lucrative deal that resulted in a verbal agreement.

Ten Hag is eyeing a defensive midfielder to give United upgrades to Fred and Scott McTominay, with other options in Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba, who will leave Old Trafford. Frenkie de Jong has been heavily linked with a move, although he offers slightly different skills to Kamara.

The youngster, recently called up for France for the first time, is more adept in his defensive duties than playmaker De Jong as he has often been the pivot between defense and midfield in Ligue 1.

Goal reported back in March that Atletico were looking to sign Kamara, who made over 150 appearances for Marseille after making his debut at the tender age of 16. Diego Simeone and co are said to be confident in their pursuit as Bayern Munich, Roma and AC Milan monitored his situation.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria expressed his disappointment at the loss of Kamara by saying: “Losing a player at the end of the contract, especially one of your best and one with one of the best values in the squad, is always a failure.”
