When Sir Alex Ferguson say goodbye to Manchester United the job in May 2013, the most anticipated is the incumbent Premier League champions to remember their legendary manager.
But they are still backed to challenge for a silver title under Ferguson’s successor David Moyes – and if he can’t, they’ll find someone who can.
No one predicted they would suffer a drought similar to Liverpool – the dominant team of the eighties – who failed to win a single league championship between 1990 and 2020.
Not the least Ole Gunnar Solskjaerwho was appointed United manager in December 2018 after a difficult five-year spell under Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
Speaking in January 2020, the Norwegian insisted his side won’t suffer a 30-year title drought like Liverpool and hope success is just around the corner.

“That’s what we’re working hard to make sure doesn’t happen,” said Solskjaer.
“And let that be a lesson to us that we can’t let ourselves pass another 24 years until we win the league and I’m sure we won’t.
“I believe in this club, I believe we are rebuilding now, we have started something that will take some time but we will get there.”
But what Solskjaer “started” is now over. He was sacked last November and United are struggling under his replacement Ralf Rangnick.
Manchester club are currently fifth in the league – one point behind Arsenal played three more games – and couldn’t win both FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
Their last hope to win the title this season is Champions Leaguewith the important round of 16 match against Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford coming up on Wednesday night.
And very few people support them to win the prestigious contest.
It is not supposed to be this way. When United re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo are from Juventus last summer, many thought he was the final piece to their post-Fergie puzzle.
According to a survey conducted by The Express Last August, 70% of Red Devils fans believed the Portuguese icon would inspire them to win this season.
After all, United finished second in the Premier League and Europa League last season. Solskjaer’s team is on the rise and is approaching the success gap.

However, Ronaldo’s return is not yet in the plan. Instead of giving United the edge many expected, there were only leaks in the dressing room and disappointment.
How United move forward is unclear. Some, such as Gary Neville, believe that Rangnick – who began a two-year consulting contract in the summer – is on a “truth quest”.
Others, however, asserted that they had no direction from Rangnick and had no clue how to conduct their perennial quest to achieve success.
Next season marks the 10th anniversary of United’s last Premier League title win – and it will take a brave man to bet they break that tradition in May 2023.
With each passing term, the chance that Man United can compete with Liverpool’s 30-year wait becomes more and more likely. When a giant in football falls, it’s never easy to come back.
