It will be another busy summer for some of the Premier League’s best sides as they look to improve their squads ahead of the new season. But elite talent usually ranks high, which means it can be a costly task.

One strategy often overlooked by the Premier League’s top teams is to exploit the free transfers market.

There is often a plethora of talented stars available for free transfers each summer, but we rarely see enough teams to take advantage.

However, that has been changing across the continent in recent years, with big clubs like PSG signing a host of stars including Lionel Messi, Georginio Wijnaldum and Sergio Ramos in fee-free deals.

La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have followed suit this year and are expected to announce soon that they have signed preliminary deals for Chelsea duo Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

It’s only a matter of time before a club announce the signing of midfield maestro Paul Pogba on a free transfer too, as he will leave Manchester United once his contract expires at the end of this season.

As such, there are many more big names roaming free this season mirror football has analyzed some of the players available and identified which clubs could possibly be a best fit for them.

Axel Witsel – Manchester United

Signing a new defensive midfielder is a priority for Manchester United this summer. However, as they look to step up a number of key positions under Erik ten Hag, knowing the market could be crucial.

Witsel is without a contract at Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season and is moving on a free transfer. Despite this, he is still a key player for the Bundesliga club this year and has made 39 appearances so far.

The 32-year-old is a dominant presence who possesses exquisite technical ability, just what United need. He could be the ideal gap for next season while they continue to look for a younger and longer-term option.

Ivan Perisic – Newcastle United

It’s fair to say that moving on deadline day in January to loan Matt Targett from Aston Villa paid off for Newcastle and he’s been a key player for Eddie Howe’s side in recent months.

However, with expectations rising at St James’ Park, the focus will be on bringing in bigger and better players this summer and Perisic could be just that.

There’s a chance Inter could still persuade the versatile Croatian to stay and it’s easy to see why they would want that after a strong season from the 33-year-old in which he has scored nine goals and recorded nine assists from left-back . However, it looks like he will be leaving San Siro in June and St James’ Park could be an exciting next project for him.

Kylian Mbappe – Liverpool

Reports surfaced this week that Mbappe had agreed to a contract extension with PSG, but the star’s mother has since confirmed those reports were untrue. This leaves the door open for Real Madrid to finally seal a deal for the France international, as has been expected for some time.

However, Liverpool have also had a long-standing interest in the 23-year-old. And the next few weeks could play a crucial role in perhaps tipping the scales in their favor as Jurgen Klopp’s men go after a historic quadruple.

Should they pull off that feat, there would be few arguments against being seen as the best side in the world right now, making them hugely attractive to potential transfer targets, including Mbappe.

Despite signing a new striker in Luis Diaz in January, Liverpool are still set to lose Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah next year.

This therefore opens the door for a new superstar to join their ranks and Mbappe’s availability this summer makes him the ideal player to be just that.
