Stam tells Man Utd board to back Ten Hag as rebuild begins

New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly already found the man he wants to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.

The Dutchman is set to join Old Trafford at the end of the season and is expected to undergo a major overhaul of the club’s squad. One of the first names he could target is Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries.

It comes as a United youngster who has been compared to Ten Hag’s former Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has returned to the club prematurely after being loaned to Birmingham City this season. Opportunities could come his way after Eric Bailly and Phil Jones confirmed they intend to leave United when the Ten Hag revolution begins this summer.

Wan-Bissaka surrogate identified

Ten Hag reportedly wants Inter Milan’s Dumfries to replace Wan-Bissaka in United’s starting line-up once he arrives.

The current Ajax boss is keen to use new full-backs at both sides as part of his United overhaul as he targets players who can quickly adapt to his playing style. Dumfries is seen as spot on – and could offer significantly more threat in attack than Wan-Bissaka.

But having arrived in Italy less than a year ago as part of a £15million summer move, United may need to shell out a significant amount to convince the Serie A giants to part ways with the defender.

Two more stars to leave

Bailly and Jones have both told the club they will leave the Red Devils this summer.

United face big changes in the summer transfer window with Ten Hag looking to overhaul the squad. While many new faces are expected, some stars will also be leaving.

Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Lee Grant will all be on the road, with Jones and Bailly poised to follow. Bailly is increasingly frustrated with his lack of first-team football this season – particularly given captain Harry Maguire’s struggles.

It’s also believed that Jones sees his future elsewhere, despite making a handful of appearances this season.

‘Next Matthijs de Ligt’ returns

Teden Mengi has made an early return to the Manchester Reds after his loan spell at Birmingham.

The defender, who has been compared to De Ligt by former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, picked up an injury at the end of the season and will now undergo rehabilitation at his parent club. Ten Hag is certainly happy to be compared to De Ligt after mentoring the Dutch defender at Ajax.

Menghi will now look to regain his fitness to impress his new boss when he arrives with United at the heart of defense this summer.
