Manchester United have been forced to put their plans for the ‘ideal’ managerial appointment on hold this summer.
The Red Devils are currently searching for their next permanent boss after temporarily putting Raf Rangnick in charge of the club following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November. The Old Trafford side are reportedly shortlisted from four after suffering defeat in their hopes of appointing one of the world’s top coaching wonders.
It comes as United prepare for a major summer overhaul that could see them not only appoint a new manager but overhaul their entire squad. And Sir Alex Ferguson admits he had doubts before making one of the “most disappointing signings” of his footballing career.
Here are Mirror football latest Manchester United headlines.
Sir Alex’s doubts
Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had “doubts” before making one of the “most disappointing signings” at Old Trafford.
United became one of the most impressive sides in world football under Ferguson’s stewardship, although he wasn’t entirely infallible when it came to botched signings. While memories of the likes of David Bellion and Bebe wearing the United shirt will cause many United fans to shudder, it is Owen Hargreaves that Sir Alex admits he had doubts about even before bringing him to the club .
Sir Alex says the move “turned out to be a disaster” – and slammed Hargreaves for not showing enough of a crucial quality during his time at the club.
Many Manchester United players could see their positions at the club in jeopardy this summer.
After a disappointing season in which Old Trafford Club struggled to maintain consistent form on the pitch and dissatisfaction was reported behind the scenes, the club are moving into the next transfer window knowing their squad is in dire need of an overhaul. A new manager is to be added, interim boss Ralf Rangnick is to switch to an advisory role.
The reorganization could see United working hard to remove the deadwood from the club’s playing staff and each player’s future has been spelled out as either ‘not dropped’, ‘stay in place’, ‘last chance’, ‘ without contract’ or ‘for sale’.
Scheduling put on hold
Manchester United have had to accept that Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann will not be the club’s next permanent manager.
Bosses at Old Trafford reportedly see the Bayern boss as the perfect fit ‘in an ideal world’, although they have accepted it will be too difficult to get him out of Germany. That has led them to create a four-man shortlist that includes Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Spain manager Luis Enrique and Sevilla manager Julian Lopetegui.
But there could be further heartache for the Red Devils down the line with Nagelsmann reportedly eyeing the job of manager at one of theirs First League rivals.
