Man Utd’s worst Premier League season ever

Manchester United fans will be grateful to have a weekend off to see their struggling team, although the pain can come in different ways.

On Saturday, bitter rivals added Liverpool to their trophy case with an FA Cup win over Chelsea, while their neighbor Manchester City can win the Premier League title on Sunday if they beat West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Both teams’ recent performances are a reminder of just how far the Red Devils have yet to go and how challenging a short-lived new manager Erik ten Hag will be as he walks through the doors of Old Trafford.

mirror sports has all your United headlines as the clock keeps ticking towards a campaign the club will forget.

Müller on “insane” United offer

Bayern Munich icon Thomas Muller has revealed the club turned down an “insane” offer from Manchester United when Louis van Gaal was in charge at Old Trafford.

With Van Gaal and Muller having previously worked together, there was much speculation that the Germany international would move to Manchester when he took over as manager in 2014. A move didn’t materialize, however, and Muller has continued to build on his glittering legacy at the Allianz Arena.

The 32-year-old recently signed a new contract to stay at the club for another two years and he has mused about the Premier League side’s offer.

“Bayern clearly rejected the whole thing – despite this insane offer from United,” said Müller. “[But it was a] big vote of confidence from Bayern.”

United include Youth Cup winners in training

United added three of the team’s FA Youth Cup winners to their first-team training squad this week.

Fans packed Old Trafford this week to see the club’s next generation take on Nottingham Forest and they lifted the trophy in a 3-1 win thanks to a brace from Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra and an opening goal from Rhys Bennett.

Some of those performances also appear to be enough for the youngsters in the last week of the season to earn a first-team appearance as there is little play against Crystal Palace in the season finale.

While Garnacho and Bennett were on Wednesday’s goalscoring list, it was Alvaro Fernandez, Shola Shoretire and Teden Mengi who were spotted with the senior squad at Carrington.

United said to add a marquee signing

With Paul Pogba’s departure from Old Trafford now seemingly inevitable, the club need to make an addition in central midfield.

While Pogba clearly had his weaknesses, at his best he was a creative force at the center of the team and there’s nobody in the current squad of players who can offer that to Ten Hag.

Felix Keith thinks it’s important for the Red Devils to add a marquee midfielder should the Frenchman’s departure be complete, although he also noted how poorly United have fared at big-name acquisitions in recent years.

“A scathing recent report by the CIES Football Observatory found they had spent £1.3bn over the last 10 years while generating £397m in revenue, giving them a whopping negative net spend of £908m,” he wrote. “You don’t have much to show for this expense. ”
