Manchester United’s hopes of signing Darwin Nunez were boosted after the Benfica striker’s personal agents gave a hint as to where the player’s future might lie
Benfica striker Darwin Nunez has his sights set on a move to the Premier League in the summer.
And that’s sure to alarm Manchester United, who are looking for a new No9 this summer and have included Nunez on their list of potential candidates.
But there could be a big sticking point that Nunez wants Champions League football, with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid also watching developments and United not set to be in Europe’s top competition. Nunez’s agents believe his style could go well with English football and United have been monitoring developments in hopes the 22-year-old Uruguay international will opt for a move to the Premier League.
No one has come close to Benfica’s valuation so far and the Portuguese giants have tied him to a contract until 2025 with a £130m buy-out clause. The figure of around £70m is a more likely target as Benfica are likely to be willing to sell at the right price. Newcastle and Wolves have also shown interest, Brighton have scouted him in the past but now his rating puts him in the top European club market.
Benfica appear likely to start an auction this summer and are determined to fetch a hefty price tag after Nunez’s stellar season, including six Champions League goals that helped knock out Ajax in the quarter-finals. They lost to Liverpool but Nunez scored in both legs of the quarter-finals, including at Anfield where he received rave reviews. United are desperate to increase their firepower this summer, particularly as Manchester City have signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in what looks like a steal thanks to a £67million buyout clause.

United are still unsure if Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Old Trafford with the veteran striker in the autumn of his career, while Edinson Cavani is set to leave and new boss Erik ten Hag is keen to sign a top striker. Newcastle could also be interested in Nunez but could struggle if Manchester United match their interest with a firm offer.
Nunez might already have been at Barcelona if the club’s leadership listened to Luis Suarez, who was still at the Catalan giants in 2019. His compatriot played in Spain’s second division with Almeria but the advice was not taken and he joined Benfica in 2020. Nunez caught the attention of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ahead of the Champions League game against Benfica. Ahead of the second leg at Anfield, Klopp said: “An extremely good looking boy, right?! He’s a really good boy – he played before me in the fight against Ibrahima Konate. He’s good, really good. If he stays healthy, he. ” has a great career ahead of him.”
