Rangnick confirms plans to hold talks with new boss ten Hag

Manchester United travel to the south coast this weekend to take on Brighton and Hove Albion and will welcome back skipper Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils won their last home game of the season earlier in the week and will now end their season with back-to-back days away. Ralf Rangnick’s interim period will soon be over and with Alvaro Fernandez he could give another teenager his first appearance.

The left-back has been in the matchday squad for the last three games but has seen the likes of Alejandro Garnacho create opportunities. Fernandez could finally get his shot at Saturday’s game at Amex Stadium as United see the final games of a disappointing year.

Maguire was among those who took the bulk of the criticism. The centre-back, now in her third year at Old Trafford, suffered a hangover at this Euro 2020 and has missed the last four games, with her last game coming on April 16 in the win against Norwich City.

Rangnick confirmed the Englishman will be part of the squad but refused to say if he would return to his regular role. The German said: “Harry is back in training. He’s been training all week since day two after the Brentford game so tomorrow he’ll be available and be part of the group.”

On the starting option, he added: “It’s a decision I have to make after practice today. I don’t want to tell our opponents the starting line-up.” Rangnick has confirmed Rashford, another player who has struggled throughout the campaign, will be absent. Eric Bailly, meanwhile, is doubtful.

Jesse Lingard will be leaving this summer

Jesse Lingard will also be part of the squad despite missing out on a send-off from Old Trafford on Monday. The player will leave for free this summer and Rangnick’s decision not to give the academy graduate a permanent home appearance caused his brother to lash out on social media.

Rangnick has claimed the club are “classless”, saying: “First of all, in the last few weeks under my tenure, he’s played far more games than he used to.

“Number two, on match day against Chelsea, he asked me to release him from the game and training the next day for personal family reasons. I made the decision to go with Edinson. If I hadn’t gotten him someone might have asked if it’s classless not to bring Cavani or Garnacho. After two substitutions you have to make a decision and not everyone will like that. That’s part of the game.”

The German was impressed by the way they performed against Brentford and hopes the players, despite having little to play, can continue in vain.

He said: “I’m sure the team will try to play at the same level against Brighton tomorrow and Crystal Palace in two weeks’ time. It’s our job again and what I liked about the game is that you could see that they are.” They enjoyed playing together, they felt comfortable on the pitch and that’s the kind of approach we need tomorrow.”
