Speaking to Premier League Productions about Van de Beek, Carrick said: “He is also very flexible. He has different strengths.

“He’s been playing for three nights now [against Tottenham ], but I think he’s really dangerous in and around the box. He’s really smart in and around the box. ”

Below both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick, the midfielder struggled during game time and when called up he was often used in a variety of positions.

Under Rangnick, Van de Beek was often deployed in central midfield as a No 6, although he has thrived at Ajax as a more senior No 10.

“I think I can do it [play as a six] but, of course, I don’t know what the manager thinks or what he expects of me,” Van de Beek declared. I have played in this position before with Ajax.

Van de Beek has been given a new contract with Everton until the end of the season

“Of course, I ended up playing number 10, but I also played a few number six games. I can play this role.

“That’s really hard to say [what my best position is]. That depends on how you play as a team.

“As for the way we play, I think the best position for me is number six or number eight.”

However, United’s loss was Everton’s gain, and Frank Lampard will hope Van de Beek can send a message to Rangnick while helping the Toffees in their desperate battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
