Manchester United so disappointing goalless draw against Watford threatened relegation on Saturday was sure to spark a reaction among supporters.
This is a team that has won just one of their last 19 games, returning to Old Trafford after a 4-1 thrashing by Crystal Palace leaving them languishing in 19th place.
Confidence was not high on Roy Hodgson’s side. And yet, with a bit of luck, they left Manchester with a very reliable point to go through with a trio they won in a remarkable 4-1 win over United in November.
After the 0-0 draw, Rangnick went to sign some memorabilia for Man United fans outside Old Trafford.
There he was approached by a supporter who wanted to ask the interim manager about the club’s transfer plans in the summer.
The exchange offers a glimpse into the mind of a typical fan, as does Rangnick, who will become a consultant in the summer when a new manager arrives.
The supporter asked: “There are three big names coming to the club in the summer – [Jules] Kounde, [Declan] Rice and [Erling] Haaland…”
Rangnick replied, “Who?”
The fan repeated: “Kounde, Rice and Haaland.”
Rangnick returned: “What are you dreaming at night?!”.
The German leader’s blunt reaction is not surprising, given his stated thoughts on the transfer.
“My opinion on the winter transfer is clear,” Rangnick said in December when asked about the January transfer window.

“It needs to be a quality player who improves the team to be better, it needs to be a high-quality player, no matter what area of the pitch.
“If it’s a midfielder or anything, it needs to be a player that really helps us improve.
“And on the other hand it needs to be a player, in case we want him in the summer and he’ll be ready for the same conditions in the winter, then it might make sense to discuss that.” that and think about it.
“But well, if those two things come together. And it needs to be the right mentality, not just the right quality. Especially for this competitive tournament, we also need to have the best mentality possible.
“They need to be mature enough, have a winning mentality. For me, mentality is even more important than any league in the world. “
Having spent many years as director of football at RB Leipzig, Rangnick has clear convictions when it comes to transfers.
Although he will eventually leave in the summer, with a new manager taking control, Rangnick will still have influence.

He’s the man in charge of the team at the moment – and he’s someone to whom director of football John Murtough has agreed to take on a two-year mentorship role.
Therefore, if Rangnick has anything to do with it, United won’t just take the checkbook to Sevilla’s Kounde, West Ham of Rice and Borussia Dortmund of Haaland.
United showed last summer when they signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane that they had the financial clout to compete with the European giants.
This summer is being billed as a reset. Ed Woodward – whom many fans blame for the current state of affairs – is gone. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is gone. Rangnick will soon be sidelined.
A new leadership team from Murtough, chief technical officer Darren Fletcher and chief operating officer Richard Arnold have been empowered. A new manager, possibly Mauricio Pochettino, possibly Erik ten Hag, will be hired.
Recruitment is an important aspect of that direction. United need to get it right. They need a world-class midfielder and Haaland’s goals certainly won’t happen.
But a more deliberate approach than simply must be the way forward in what promises to be a completely failed season for the club.
