Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has dropped all charges

The 21 year old soccer player was suspended by the club after being accused of attempted rape and assault.

The Crown Prosecutor said the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light were factors in her decision to drop the case.

Greater Manchester Police said it was “only fair” that they announce it green wood would no longer be prosecuted due to the publicity of his case.

Bradford-born Greenwood originally faced an attempted rape case, a controlling and coercive behavior case and an assault case, all against the same complainant.

Manchester United have not yet commented on the news but the forward remains at the club despite the suspension and was included in the Under-21 section of their squad at the start of the current season.

It is also believed green wood still earns his weekly wages of £75,000.

Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Head of Public Protection at Greater Manchester Police, said: “The investigative team have remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing important updates and therefore understand the reasons for the closure of the case at this stage and so this one it was not an easy decision for us.

“Despite media and public interest in this case, we have chosen not to comment further on it.

“However, I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate GMP’s commitment to investigate allegations of violence against women and girls and to support those affected, regardless of their circumstances, at this potentially difficult and troubling time.

“An ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training, and the force is more consistently using the tools available through the criminal justice system to keep people safe and care for victims.

“If you believe you are, or may be, a victim, please do not let this case prevent you from seeking help.”
