A brave passerby has told how “instinct kicked in” as he grabbed two men and brought one to the ground after a pensioner said he had just been robbed.

Kris, from Hull, said he was able to trip the man in the city center and hold him down while another escaped after the alleged robbery, he reported HullLive.

Police were then called to the incident near the prospect center around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Kris said: “I was walking towards Heron Foods from the Prospect Center when I saw two men coming towards me quickly. An old gentleman came around the corner and shouted, ‘The boys robbed me’.

“I grabbed them both but one got away so I tripped over the one I could still hold and lowered it to the ground. I pinned him to the sidewalk and knelt on his hip to hold him steady.

“He couldn’t move, so he wasn’t violent, he was just protesting his innocence. I asked the gentleman if he was okay. He seemed shaken and appeared to be a vulnerable guy of about 70 years old.”

Kris says he reacted out of anger when he saw them trying to tease an older man.

He said: “Instinct just kicked in. I despise thieves. People work hard all their lives and others think they can just take what they want. We’re all going through tough times right now and the guy got his pension. I don’t know what the amount was, but that’s completely irrelevant! Even for just £1, the poor old chap didn’t need that stress in his life.

“I just did it because I thought he was someone’s grandpa and if mine were still alive and in the same predicament I would hope someone would do the same. The police then intervened and handcuffed the man. The Lord, still a bit shaken, was so grateful. He shook my hand and thanked me about 5 or 6 times in 30 seconds. Hopefully this has restored his faith in humanity.”

A witness reports how suddenly there was a large police presence. Several officers came down on South Street near the Prospect Center.

The witness said: “I noticed a group huddled around a man who was lying on the ground and there was a police officer who was with them. A few minutes later I noticed that there were more officers – there were two cars and a van. Then another can popped up. It wasn’t obvious what was happening, but there were a lot of police and a lot of people around.”

Humberside Police later posted on Facebook praising those who intervened. They also confirmed that a man was arrested at the scene.

The Post said: “Officers visited Jameson Street in Hull after a member of the public arrested a man who was stealing money from an elderly, vulnerable man – fantastic community spirit shown by the person holding the elderly victim imagined.”
