Maradona switches to eFootball after dispute with FIFA 23

MARADONA will appear in eFootball following a dispute between his estate and FIFA creators EA Sports.

After his death, EA Sports signed a licensing deal to include Maradona as one of the football legends in the FIFA game series.

He has also appeared in the FIFA series after his death as a FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) icon.

In FIFA 22, he was the highest rated player in the entire game with a rating of 97 and was worth around £700 ($825) on the in-game transfer market.

This made it one of the most popular and profitable cards in the entire game, so fans were shocked to see that it didn’t return to FIFA 23.

Players have been waiting for his return since the game launched in September, however, he has not been included in any upcoming icon list.

This all boiled down to a dispute between EA Sports and Maradona’s estate over the rights to his image.

Diego Maradona passed away in November 2020, shortly after the release of FIFA 21.

EA Sports signed a licensing deal with an agent and the player’s former manager, Stefano Ceci, to use Maradona after his death.

However, the courts ruled that Ceci had no rights to his likeness and therefore could not sell the license.

When that licensing agreement was voided, it seems that after the dispute, Maradona’s estate was reluctant to renew the contract with EA Sports.

The 1986 version of Maradona now appears in FIFA 23’s competitor, the free-to-play eFootball.

The map is based on the World Cup final where Argentina famously beat England after scoring with a handball.

The eFootball version of FIFA’s FUT icons, known as Big Time Players, will launch with two maps.

One is Maradona who has a rating of 99 and the other is Neymar from 2014 who has a rating of 97.

Licensing agreements do not usually mean that a player is limited to appearing in a game.

The majority of footballers in the top leagues will play in both titles after signing an agreement with the two companies.

For Maradona fans, it seems that the only way to get The Hand of God is to play eFootball.

Maradona starts in eFootball today (November 17) when the second season in the game begins.
