Marc Cucurella becomes the most expensive full-back in the world

The Seagulls demanded and negotiated a fee of over £60m from Chelsea.

They held their own in dealing with Manchester City and Chelsea, two of the Premier League’s richest clubs, even as intermittent and unhelpful steers took to social media.

Chelsea got their man yesterday after City backed away from the Seagulls’ determination to hold on to their valuation.

The fee to be paid is higher than that which was reported early in the middle of the week.

It surpasses the £59.85million Paris St-Germain spent on Inter’s Achraf Hakimi last summer, making Cucurella the most expensive full-back in the world.

Joao Cancelo cost Manchester City £58.5m from Juventus.

In terms of left-backs, Cucurella is a far cry from Benjamin Mendy, who cost City just under £52million from Monaco five years ago.

Now boss Graham Potter has hailed the man, who signed from Getafe for around £15million less than a year ago, as one of the best in the business.

Praising Albion’s recruitment work, Potter said: “He’s a top-top player. We think he’s one of the best left-backs in the world. And he can also play to the left of a three, which is pretty rare.

“He can also play as a left-back. Being able to play those three positions, giving you that flexibility when you probably have 50 or 60 games to play is very good.

“Then he’s a top guy as a person. The players love him. A nice personality, really good.

“You can spend a lot of money on football and not guarantee it, but I think as a guy and a footballer, they have a very good player.”

Albion are currently reviewing their options for tomorrow’s game at Manchester United but have all available except for the long-absent Jakub Moder. Marc Cucurella becomes the most expensive full-back in the world
