Mariah Carey said she branded the Duchess of Sussex a “diva” in the “most fabulous, gorgeous and powerful” meaning of the word.
Shocked, Meghan said the label the pop superstar threw at her during their podcast talk “made her sweat” and “stopped her”.
In a voiceover at the end of Meghan’s second Archetypes episode, which was released by Spotify on Tuesday, the Duchess said the comment worried her about the “nonsense” Carey may have read about her.
On Friday, Carey tweeted what she meant when she called Meghan a diva and posted a link to the podcast.
“I really enjoyed speaking to Duchess and Diva Meghan Markle on ‘The Duality of the Diva.’ Yes! I have called her a diva in the most fabulous, gorgeous and powerful meaning of the word!!! #archetypes,” she wrote.
Carey had previously retweeted a Spotify Podcasts tweet linking to the episode.
The episode, titled “The Duality of the Diva Starring Mariah Carey,” explores the “complexities surrounding the ‘diva'” and the negative connotations associated with the word.
Meghan voice-over mentions the outlandish diva demands surrounding Carey – including reported requests for 20 white kittens and 100 white doves when she switched on the Christmas lights in London – but she doesn’t appear to have questioned the singer about them.

Meghan laughs and says: “You may have read about the time she allegedly requested 20 white kittens and 100 pigeons in London? I do not know.”
During the 46-minute episode, Carey told the former Suits actress, “You give us diva moments sometimes Meghan. Don’t even pretend…” to which a horrified Duchess replies, laughing in surprise, “What diva moments am I giving you?”
At the end of the podcast, Meghan said: “Everything was going smoothly, I mean really well, until this moment happened that I don’t know about her, but it kept me going when she called me a diva. ”
Meghan added: “You couldn’t see me, of course, but I started sweating a bit. I began to squirm in my chair in this silent revolt. How wait. What? Not what? How could you? That is not true. Why would you say something like that?
“My mind was really just spinning with the nonsense she must have read or clicked on to get her to say that.”
The Duchess said Carey was quick to reassure her, saying the label was “chic” and “upcoming”.
Meghan said: “She must have felt my nervous laughter and you all would have heard it too and she jumped in straight away to make sure I was crystal clear.
“When she said diva, she was talking about the way I dress, the attitude of a garment, a quote that, unquoted, is fabulous as she sees it.
“She meant diva as a compliment. I heard it as a dig. I’ve heard it as the word diva, but at that moment, as she explained to me, she meant it so chic, so ambitious.”
In the exchange, the pair discussed the concept of a diva, with Meghan saying, “It’s really important for people to remember that there could be this persona, this diva thing, that we can play into. It’s not something I associate with, but for you it was a big part.”

She also said she was told there was the same cheer in South Africa when she married Harry as there was when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
