Zanuck and other executives at 20th Century Studios initially fired Monroe because of “the studio’s opinion that I’m not photogenic,” as the actress herself recounts in her autobiography, “My story.” Fortunately, her role as Miss Casswell in “All About Eve” rekindled Monroe’s career and her love of acting once again. “I felt happy on set,” she recalls. “And, with Johnny Hyde’s help, I was able to daydream again.”
Monroe was referring to Johnny Hyde, a casting agent who believed in Monroe’s star qualities and supported her during this lull in her early career. Hyde was married, but the two had an illicit affair.
Despite the moral questions of their romance, Hyde was a huge supporter of Monroe. He pushed writer-director Joe Mankiewicz hard to give her the role of Miss Casswell. “He’s haunted my office,” complains the filmmaker (via All About All About New Year’s Eve). In the end, however, Mankiewicz was drawn to Monroe’s charms. “There’s a breathlessness and kind of innocence attached to her that I find attractive,” he admits.
